Those trials showed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab and Sindh as most \nsuitable for commercial soybean cultivation. Despite favorable agro-ecological \nconditions, soybean largely disappeared from mainstream cropping schemes by the early \n2000s. Pakistan now imports large quantities of soybean seed and oil (~2.2 million tons \nof soybean gran and >151 tons of oil). By contrast, soybean was almost absent in Indian \nagriculture before the 1970s, then expanded rapidly in central India, and area under \nsoybean cultivation has reached about ~9.5-10 million ha with production ~10-12 million \ntons (NAAS.org).<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">According to recent press reports, Pakistan aims to halve soybean imports by deploying \nclimate-resilient varieties and projects local production could reach ~3 million tons by \n2030. However, Pakistan\u2019s soybean production remains modest despite suitable agro\necologies. Studies indicate constraints such as \u201clack of germplasm with specific maturity \ngroups adaptable to various environmental conditions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:30px; margin-bottom:18px;\">Current Situation in Pakistan: Climate-Resilient Soybean Development<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">Pakistan\u2019s soybean production is limited relative to potential; the major bottlenecks \nare unsuitable germplasm maturity groups, low adoption of high-yield and pest\nresistant genotypes, and poor marketing infrastructure. With rising imports and \ndomestic feed\/edible oil demand, enhanced climate-resilient varieties could \ncontribute to import substitution and increased value-capture within the country. \nResearch collaborations (e.g., China-Pakistan) are targeting heat-tolerant, climate\nsmart soybean varieties suited to Pakistan\u2019s warm, semi-arid zones.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:30px; margin-bottom:18px;\">Maturity Group Fit by Region in Pakistan<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">Selecting appropriate soybean Maturity Groups (MG) ensures timely \nflowering\/maturity under local photoperiod &#038; heat regimes. Current literature \nhighlights Pakistan\u2019s need for germplasm tailored to these regional demands. In \nPakistan:<\/p>\n\n<ul style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\n<li>Central Punjab \/ irrigated plains (warm, longer day-length): Mid-to-late \nmaturity groups (MG IV\u2013MG VI) may fit best to avoid early heat stress and to \nutilize late-season moisture.<\/li>\n\n<li>Southern Punjab \/ Sindh border regions (hotter, shorter growing window): \nEarly maturity groups (MG I\u2013MG III) are preferable to avoid terminal \nheat\/humidity stress and shorter growing seasons.<\/li>\n\n<li>Rain-fed uplands \/ marginal zones (variable moisture): Very early maturity \ngroups (MG I\u2013MG III) and short-season varieties are advisable to escape \ndrought\/heat episodes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:30px; margin-bottom:18px;\">Key Challenges<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\u2022 Germplasm adaptability: Few locally-bred soybean lines have both heat\/drought \ntolerance and yield competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\u2022 Seed system &#038; varietal turnover: Slow replacement of old varieties; limited access \nto certified seed.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\u2022 Pest &#038; disease pressure: Soybean in Pakistan is vulnerable to insect pests, \npathogens; low resistance in current varieties.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\u2022 Irrigation\/soil constraints: Many areas face water-stress or low-fertility soils, \nreducing yields.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\u2022 Market &#038; value-chain constraints: Weak linkages for processing, lower farmer \nincentives, dependence on imports.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\u2022 Regulatory\/biotech barriers: Introduction of biotech (Roundup-Ready\/insect\nprotected) soybean requires regulatory approval, biosafety frameworks, and farmer \nacceptance.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">\u2022 Climate risks: High temperatures, erratic rainfall, floods, and humidity pose yield \nrisks and require resilient varieties and agronomic managment.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:30px; margin-bottom:18px;\">Potential of Biotech (Roundup-Ready) Soybean in Pakistan<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">Pakistan already imports large volumes of soybeans and soybean meal; a 2021 \nUSDA-FAS report notes about 2.2 million metric tons of soybeans imported in 2020. \nBiotech soybean (glyphosate-tolerant \u201cRoundup-Ready\u201d) offers potential benefits: \neasier weed control, reduced labour\/chemical costs, improved yields, and improved \neconomics for farmers. However, adoption will require regulatory approval of \nbiotech events in Pakistan; local adaptation of biotech lines to Pakistani maturity \ngroups and climates; seed system readiness; farmer training; market\/trade \nacceptance. If introduced successfully, biotech soybean could significantly boost \nproductivity, reduce costs, and support Pakistan\u2019s goal of import reduction.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:30px; margin-bottom:18px;\">Strategic Recommendations for Policy &#038; Research<\/h2>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">1. Accelerate breeding &#038; seed system development  \n\u2013 Invest in breeding programs focused on heat\/drought tolerant soybean lines \nand region-specific maturity groups.  \n\u2013 Develop partnerships (public \u00d7 private) to release and rapidly deploy \nimproved germplasm.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">2. Adapt maturity group research by agro-ecology  \n\u2013 Map Pakistani agro-zones and determine optimum MG fits; support research \ntrials by region to validate performance.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8; margin-bottom:22px;\">3. There is scope to increase yields \nclose to global averages by embracing climate-resilient varieties, production technologies, \nand exploring biotech soybean which can unlock significant value for farmers, industry, \nand national food security.
