The project is part of the research initiative\u00a0<strong>\u201cGrassy \u2013 Can diversity deliver climate-smart grassland systems?\u201d<\/strong>, funded by the\u00a0<strong>Independent Research Fund Denmark<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scientific Background and Project Vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grassland systems composed of diverse mixtures of&nbsp;<strong>grasses, legumes, and forbs<\/strong>&nbsp;have the potential to deliver higher productivity, greater resilience to environmental stress, enhanced biodiversity, and increased soil carbon storage. However, the mechanisms underlying these benefits remain insufficiently understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This PhD project aims to&nbsp;<strong>unravel the belowground processes<\/strong>&nbsp;that drive the performance of diverse ley mixtures, with a particular focus on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Root growth and root traits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stabilisation of soil organic matter (SOM)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soil biota, especially earthworms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon and nitrogen dynamics in plant\u2013soil systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research Project Description<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A central component of the project is a&nbsp;<strong>field experiment conducted in the state-of-the-art DeepRootLab<\/strong>&nbsp;at the Crop Sciences section of PLEN. The PhD candidate will combine&nbsp;<strong>field-based and controlled-environment experiments<\/strong>&nbsp;to quantify how plant diversity influences ecosystem functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key research activities include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Measuring plant productivity and root growth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analysing carbon and nitrogen in soil organic matter fractions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessing soil biodiversity, with emphasis on earthworms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applying isotopic labelling techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sampling and imaging roots, soil, and earthworm casts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conducting soil analyses and fractionation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Performing plant growth experiments in field and glasshouse conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research Environment and Collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The PhD fellow will be part of the&nbsp;<strong>Belowground Crop Ecology group<\/strong>&nbsp;within the&nbsp;<strong>Crop Sciences section<\/strong>&nbsp;at PLEN, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen.
