Problems like <strong>stunting<\/strong> (children too short for their age), <strong>wasting<\/strong> (children too thin for their height), and <strong>micronutrient deficiencies<\/strong> (lack of essential vitamins and minerals) are very common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Facts from Surveys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the <strong>National Nutrition Survey 2018<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>40.2% of children under five were <strong>stunted<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>17.7% were <strong>wasted<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>9.5% were <strong>overweight<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many women and children lack important nutrients:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>42.6% of women of reproductive age were <strong>anemic<\/strong> (low iron).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>46.9% of pregnant women were iron deficient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High rates of <strong>vitamin D deficiency<\/strong> affected 81.2% of pregnant women and 62.7% of children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recent data (from sources like SOFI and global reports around 2023\u20132025) show some changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stunting in children under five is around 33.6\u201337.6%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wasting is about 7.1\u201310%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anemia in women of reproductive age remains high at around 41\u201348%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Poor diet<\/strong> is the top risk factor for disease and all forms of malnutrition in Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many households struggle to buy nutritious food:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Pakistan Cost of Diet Analysis 2016<\/strong> found that 67% of households could not afford a nutritionally adequate diet, and about 5% could not even meet basic energy needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to <strong>SOFI 2023<\/strong> (data for 2021), <strong>82.8%<\/strong> of Pakistanis (more than 192 million people) could not afford a <strong>healthy diet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on Adolescents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adolescents make up 23% of Pakistan&#8217;s population and often face poor nutrition. Among girls aged 15\u201319:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stunting affects about 22%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overweight affects about 16%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than half have <strong>anemia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other deficiencies: 21% iron-deficient, 49% lack folic acid, 42% zinc deficiency, and 40% vitamin A deficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Double Burden: Undernutrition and Overnutrition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poor diets cause not only deficiencies but also rising <strong>overweight<\/strong> and <strong>obesity<\/strong>. Overweight among children under five nearly doubled from 5% in 2011 to 9.5% in 2018. This increases risks of serious health issues like heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GAIN&#8217;s Work in Pakistan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)<\/strong> has been active in Pakistan since 2007. It started with <strong>Large-Scale Food Fortification<\/strong> (adding nutrients to everyday foods like oil, flour, and salt).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, GAIN expanded to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adolescent nutrition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engaging the private sector through the <strong>SUN Business Network<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GAIN partners with the government, businesses, and civil society to shape public policies and programs. This helps address malnutrition, especially for children and women, through evidence-based solutions. GAIN&#8217;s efforts support <strong>Sustainable Development Goal 2<\/strong> \u2014 ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following GAIN&#8217;s new global strategy (2023\u20132027), work in Pakistan now aligns with food system transformation to improve nutrition outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, GAIN and its partners run several key programs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Commercialization of Biofortification of Crops<\/strong> (promoting nutrient-rich crops like zinc wheat).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Large-Scale Food Fortification (LSFF)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sub-National Food System Dashboard<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Access to Better Dairy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social Protection Project<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support for businesses via the <strong>SUN Business Network (SBN)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through these efforts, GAIN aims to make nutritious food more available, affordable, and accessible for everyone in Pakistan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pakistan faces one of the highest burdens of malnutrition in the world.
