Pakistan\u2019s recently announced cooperation with China in the animal vaccine sector is being seen as an important step for improving disease control, strengthening livestock health standards and creating new export opportunities for the country\u2019s livestock industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sindh Livestock and Fisheries Department has signed a joint venture agreement with China\u2019s Luoyang Modern Biology Group for the supply of animal vaccines, including vaccines for foot and mouth disease, commonly known as FMD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agreement also includes technology transfer and the development of animal traceability systems. Experts believe these measures can support the modernization of Pakistan\u2019s livestock sector and help the country move closer to international export requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking with Wealth Pakistan, Dr Umair Nawaz, Manager Dairy and Livestock at Habib Bank Limited Zarai Services Pakistan, said effective vaccination against FMD remains essential for improving Pakistan\u2019s livestock export prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said better disease management and wider vaccination coverage can help improve livestock health standards, especially at the smallholder and village level. In many rural areas, unvaccinated animals still enter the supply chain, creating challenges for disease control and export certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Nawaz said consistent vaccination, supported by proper cold chain management, can help Pakistan move toward FMD free status. This is considered necessary for gaining access to premium international meat and livestock markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that improvement in public sector vaccine availability, cold chain systems and farmer awareness can support long term growth in the livestock sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Nawaz emphasized the need for stronger coordination between the public and private sectors to improve vaccine delivery and monitoring systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also highlighted the importance of deploying trained veterinarians at village and market levels so that small farmers can access affordable vaccination services more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to experts, stronger veterinary outreach can reduce disease risks, improve animal productivity and support the development of a more reliable export supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ahmed Faraz, a livestock expert and farm manager, described Pakistan China cooperation as a positive development for the livestock industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said China has advanced capabilities in biotechnology and scientific research. Improved disease management through effective vaccination can help Pakistan improve its export performance and strengthen the competitiveness of its livestock products in international markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Faraz said the global market demands disease free and antibiotic residue free meat. He added that locally produced vaccines based on indigenous disease strains can be highly beneficial for Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said Pakistan currently depends largely on imported vaccines, which may not fully match local disease patterns. Local production based on indigenous strains can improve vaccine effectiveness and produce better disease management results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Faraz also stressed the importance of livestock traceability systems for export certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said importing countries require complete records of animal origin, disease history and treatment details. A proper traceability system can help Pakistan meet these requirements and build greater confidence among international buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Such systems can also support better farm management, disease surveillance and transparency across the livestock value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024 to 25, the livestock sector contributed around 14.97 percent to the country\u2019s Gross Domestic Product and 63.6 percent to agricultural value addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sector supports more than eight million rural households and contributes nearly 2.9 percent to Pakistan\u2019s exports through meat, live animals and other animal based products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pakistan\u2019s meat exports reached US dollars 511 million during financial year 2023 to 24, according to the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan. This reflects the growing potential of the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Industry stakeholders believe that improved vaccination systems, technology transfer, local vaccine production and stronger disease control measures can help Pakistan increase its share in international livestock and meat markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pakistan China vaccine initiative offers an important opportunity to strengthen Pakistan\u2019s livestock health system, improve export readiness and support rural economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If implemented effectively, the initiative can help Pakistan improve FMD control, develop local vaccine capacity, introduce traceability systems and move toward higher value livestock exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
