A bacterial infection that was once meant a prolonged illness, reduced production, or even the death of an animal can often be treated effectively with the right medicine. For farmers, veterinarians, and livestock owners, these medicines are an essential part of protecting animal health and farm productivity. But there is a growing problem that threatens this achievement: antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The term may sound complicated, but the basic idea is simple. When bacteria are repeatedly exposed to antimicrobial medicines, some can survive and develop or acquire resistance genes. Eventually, a medicine that once worked well may no longer be effective against those resistant bacteria. It is important to understand that animals or humans do not become resistant to antibiotics; the microorganisms causing infections become resistant.

This does not mean antibiotics should be stopped being used. They remain essential when animals genuinely need treatment. The real challenge is to make sure they are used correctly, only when necessary, and alongside good disease-prevention practices.

When the Cure Becomes a Challenge

Livestock farm animals face many infectious diseases, and antibiotics can be extremely valuable when bacterial infections occur. However, problems arise when antibiotics are used without a proper diagnosis, given at inappropriate doses, used for conditions they cannot treat, or administered unnecessarily.

One common misunderstanding is the use of antibiotics for every illness. Antibiotics work against bacteria; they do not cure viral infections. Treating an animal for a viral disease with an antibiotic does not solve the original problem, but it can contribute to unnecessary antimicrobial exposure. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) emphasizes that antimicrobials should be used responsibly and only when necessary.

The consequences of resistance can begin quietly on a farm. A farmer may notice that an animal is not responding to a treatment that previously worked. A second medicine may be required, treatment may take longer, and the animal may lose weight or productivity during the illness. In severe cases, infection may become difficult to control, increasing veterinary costs and economic losses.

The problem does not remain confined to a single animal or farm. Resistant bacteria can spread between animals and people through direct contact, food, and the environment. Meat and other animal products can become contaminated with resistant bacteria during production and processing if appropriate hygiene and food-safety practices are not followed. Resistant organisms can also circulate through manure, soil, and water.

This is why antimicrobial resistance is not simply a veterinary problem. It is also a food-safety, environmental, and public-health issue. Recent international evidence also provides some reason for optimism. WOAH reported a decline in antimicrobial use in animals in its 2025 monitoring data, while emphasizing that further progress is needed in responsible use, prevention, biosecurity, and surveillance.

Protecting the Medicines We Still Have

A healthy animal is less likely to need antibiotics. Good housing, adequate nutrition, clean drinking water, proper sanitation, vaccination, appropriate stocking density, quarantine of newly introduced animals, and effective farm biosecurity can all reduce the occurrence and spread of infectious diseases. When fewer animals become sick, the need for antimicrobial treatment also decreases. WOAH specifically identifies prevention, vaccination, biosecurity, and surveillance as important components of responsible antimicrobial use and stewardship.

Farmers also have an important role in ensuring that medicines are used properly. Antibiotics should not be purchased and administered simply because they worked for a previous illness. The same clinical signs can have different causes, and the appropriate treatment depends on the animal, disease diagnosis, and circumstances and resources. Veterinary advice and, where appropriate, laboratory diagnosis and antimicrobial susceptibility testing can help guide treatment decisions.

Leftover medicines should not be saved for future illnesses or shared between animals without professional advice. Correct dosage, route, frequency, and duration should be followed according to veterinary instructions and applicable regulations. For food-producing animals, farmers must also respect the withdrawal period specified for the medicine so that residues do not enter milk, meat, eggs, or other animal products intended for human consumption.

At the same time, responsibility cannot rest on farmers alone. Veterinarians, livestock producers, pharmaceutical suppliers, laboratories, researchers, policymakers, and consumers all have a role to play. Better disease surveillance can identify resistant bacteria and reveal where resistance is emerging. Better access to veterinary services can help farmers obtain appropriate treatment instead of relying on guesswork. Stronger farm biosecurity and vaccination programs can reduce the need for medicines in the first place.

This is the essence of the One Health approach. Human health, animal health, and environmental health are interconnected, and antimicrobial resistance moves across these boundaries. FAO, WHO, and WOAH therefore emphasize coordinated action across human health, animal production, food systems, and the environment.

Antibiotics are one of modern agriculture’s most valuable tools, but they are not an unlimited resource. Every unnecessary use creates another opportunity for bacteria to adapt and select, while every responsible use helps preserve these medicines for animals and people who genuinely need them. The goal, therefore, is not a farm without antibiotics. The goal is a farm where antibiotics are used wisely, diseases are prevented whenever possible, and effective treatments remain available when they are truly needed.

For the farmer, this means healthier animals, fewer avoidable treatment costs, safer food, and more sustainable livestock production. For society, it means protecting one of the most important medical resources shared by humans and animals. The medicines we have today were developed over decades. Whether they continue working effectively tomorrow will depend, in part, on how wisely we use them today.

Author: Ehsan UllahDepartment of Pathology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan.
