The 2024 European Harvest Analysis by Alltech reveals that mycotoxin risks in crops have reached moderate to high levels across Europe this year. Unpredictable weather conditions, including heavy rains followed by periods of drought, have fueled mould growth, leading to significant mycotoxin contamination that varies by region and crop. Aflatoxin B1 levels are notably high in corn samples from Hungary, Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria, with contamination levels reaching up to 506 parts per billion (ppb).
Key Findings by Crop Type:
- Wheat and Barley: Wheat samples contain an average of 7.7 mycotoxins per sample, with nearly all samples showing multiple contaminants. Barley samples have an average of 6.3 mycotoxins per sample, with multiple mycotoxins detected in 98% of cases. The primary concerns for these grains are emerging mycotoxins and type B trichothecenes, presenting a moderate risk.
- Straw: Straw samples show an average of 5.9 mycotoxins, with deoxynivalenol and emerging mycotoxins being the main threats. The overall risk level for straw is high.
- Forages: Grass and corn silage samples contain an average of 2.9 mycotoxins, with type B trichothecenes and Penicillium mycotoxins appearing most frequently. The risk level for forages is classified as high.
