The federal government has officially rolled out the Rs122.15 billion Green Pakistan Programme, a landmark national initiative designed to expand the country’s forest cover, revive degraded landscapes, conserve biodiversity, and generate green employment opportunities across Pakistan.
Approved in the Monthly Development Update for November 2025 by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, the project is scheduled for completion by 2028.
Tackling Environmental Decline
According to the report, the Green Pakistan Programme represents a comprehensive framework for enhancing long-term climate resilience. The plan includes a series of strategic interventions:
- 🌲 Forest Ecosystem Restoration: Prioritizing large-scale reforestation across diverse ecological regions.
- 🏜️ Rangeland Improvement: Strategic efforts to halt land degradation and improve soil health.
- 🦅 Wildlife Conservation: Expansion of protected areas and restoring biodiversity in vulnerable zones.
- 💧 Resource Utilization: Efficient management of natural resources and groundwater recharge.
Strengthening Response & Livelihoods
The initiative aims to strengthen wildlife protection and emergency response systems by upgrading early-warning mechanisms and enhancing provincial forest departments’ operational capacity to manage climate-induced risks.
The government expects the initiative to create significant green employment, including opportunities in nurseries, forestry operations, plantation drives, and ecosystem rehabilitation work—particularly benefiting rural communities.
Additionally, the programme supports sustainable livelihoods by promoting:
- Non-timber forest products.
- Eco-friendly income avenues.
- Improved access to markets for forest-based goods.
Community & Digital Monitoring
A strong emphasis has been placed on community participation, ensuring that local stakeholders are involved throughout the planning, restoration, and monitoring phases. To ensure transparency, the programme will utilize:
📊 Digital Monitoring Tools | 📡 Modern Reporting Systems | 🌍 Long-term Tracking
The Bottom Line: By focusing on large-scale landscape restoration, resource management, and community-driven conservation, the Green Pakistan Programme is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Pakistan’s environmental sustainability and resilience in the years ahead.
