VNV Insight: Prof. Dr. Aneela Durrani represents a rare combination of academic leadership, research excellence, and real-world livestock impact — bridging the gap between laboratory science and field-level application in Pakistan.

With a professional journey spanning over three decades, her career began in the Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Department, where she served in multiple roles including Veterinary Officer, Women Livestock Production Officer, and Coordinator of Women Extension Programs. These early experiences laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to livestock development and rural empowerment, particularly focusing on the training and uplift of women in agriculture and livestock sectors.

Her transition into academia at UVAS marked the beginning of a transformative phase, where she contributed as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and later as Professor in Clinical Medicine. Over the years, she has also taken on critical leadership roles including Chairperson of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Director of Continuing Education and Extension, and Director of the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), where she played a pivotal role in strengthening research culture and innovation within the university. She has also been actively associated with UVAS 24/7 Extension Services, ensuring that veterinary knowledge reaches farmers and stakeholders at the grassroots level.

Academically, Prof. Dr. Durrani holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and M.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, followed by a PhD in Veterinary Medicine from UVAS Lahore. Her academic journey further extends internationally with a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the University of Minnesota, USA, where she conducted advanced research on tick-borne diseases and zoonotic infections, contributing to global scientific understanding and disease control strategies.

Her research portfolio reflects a strong focus on livestock diseases with public health significance, particularly theileriosis, tick-borne infections, and zoonotic diseases. One of her notable contributions includes the exploration of herbal alternatives such as Calotropis procera for the treatment of theileriosis, highlighting her innovative approach toward sustainable and cost-effective veterinary solutions. Her work extends beyond laboratory research into real-world application, with multiple studies conducted across different districts of Pakistan, directly benefiting livestock farmers.

Beyond research, her contributions to education and knowledge dissemination are equally remarkable. She has taught a wide range of subjects from undergraduate DVM programs to postgraduate MPhil and PhD courses, covering areas such as General Medicine, Systemic Medicine, Veterinary Biotechnology, and Veterinary Medicine and Human Health. As an HEC Approved Supervisor, she continues to mentor and guide emerging researchers, contributing to the development of the next generation of veterinary professionals in Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Durrani’s work has consistently emphasized farmer-oriented solutions and community engagement. She has developed numerous training modules, extension manuals, and Urdu-language educational materials aimed at improving livestock productivity and farmer awareness.
