During his address, Rana Tanveer emphasized the urgent need for federal legislation to improve animal health and welfare standards in the country. He stated, “The National Animal Health, Welfare, and Veterinary Public Health Bill 2024, which has been approved in principle by the Federal Cabinet, is a landmark initiative that will bring Pakistan’s veterinary services in line with international standards.” The bill incorporates the “One Health Approach,” integrating human, animal, and environmental health to establish a comprehensive strategy for disease control and pandemic prevention.

The Federal Minister also underscored Pakistan’s focus on increasing halal meat exports, stressing the importance of provincial cooperation in passing the bill. He urged provincial assemblies to support this critical legislation, which will enhance inter-provincial coordination and ensure compliance with global animal health standards.

Rana Tanveer pointed out the lessons learned from zoonotic diseases like COVID-19, highlighting the need for a strong and coordinated health system. He noted that the absence of comprehensive federal legislation has hampered Pakistan’s ability to address veterinary challenges effectively.

Concluding his speech, the Minister stated, “Strengthening the livestock sector will not only improve food security but also make a significant contribution to Pakistan’s economic growth.” He reaffirmed the importance of passing the National Animal Health, Welfare, and Veterinary Public Health Bill 2024 to ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for the livestock industry and the country.

This forum marks an important step toward improving animal welfare in Pakistan, aligning the country with international practices, and securing a brighter future for both the livestock sector and the nation’s economy.
