FAISALABAD: Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar, a senior physicist, researcher and academic administrator at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), has been appointed Dean, Faculty of Sciences, marking another important responsibility in a career spanning teaching, scientific research and university administration.

Academic Background of Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar
Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar has an extensive academic background in physics and electromagnetics. According to his official UAF curriculum vitae, he completed his MSc in Physics with specialization in Electronics from the University of the Punjab in 2001 and earned his PhD in Electromagnetics from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, in 2009.
His international academic exposure includes work at the Department of Electrical Engineering, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, where he served as a postdoctoral researcher and Assistant Professor from August 2013 to June 2015.
Academic Career at UAF
His university career includes teaching and research experience at Federal Urdu University Islamabad, Sarhad University and Government College University Faisalabad before joining the University of Agriculture Faisalabad as an Assistant Professor in January 2010.
At UAF, he subsequently served as Associate Professor from 2016 to 2024 and became a Professor on the Tenure Track System in October 2024.
He also served as Chairman, Department of Physics, UAF, from September 2017 to November 2020, providing academic and administrative leadership to the department.
Expertise in Electromagnetics and Advanced Materials
Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar’s principal specialization is electromagnetic field theory. His research expertise covers a range of advanced areas, including:
- Electromagnetic field theory
- Metamaterials and chiral metamaterials
- Electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering
- High-frequency electromagnetic techniques
- Plasmonic and surface waves
- Waveguides
- Graphene-based electromagnetic applications
- Maslov’s method and high-frequency field analysis
UAF also lists him as an HEC Approved Supervisor, reflecting his role in postgraduate research and development of young scientists.
Strong Research and Postgraduate Supervision Profile
His UAF-hosted academic record reports more than 190 research publications and a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 300. His research portfolio includes publications in areas such as electromagnetic scattering, surface plasmon polaritons, wave propagation, graphene, plasma interfaces and advanced electromagnetic materials.
His CV also records extensive postgraduate supervision, including seven completed PhD scholars and a large number of MS, MPhil and undergraduate research students.
Among his funded research activities are projects supported by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and Pakistan Science Foundation. These include research on graphene-encapsulated nanomaterials for electromagnetic applications in cancer detection and treatment, as well as high-frequency electromagnetic fields in chiral media.
His academic distinctions include multiple Research Productivity Awards and an HEC-funded indigenous PhD fellowship.
Experience Beyond Teaching and Research
Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar has also held several significant administrative assignments at UAF. His institutional experience includes service as Executive Director, Endowment Fund Secretariat.
In March 2025, UAF officially announced that he had assumed charge as Director, Punjab Bioenergy Institute and would also work as Principal, UAF Community College PARS and Principal Officer for related university educational operations.
As Principal Officer of the UAF Laboratory School system, he publicly emphasized quality education, student development and the promotion of sports for students’ physical and mental wellbeing.
Contribution to Scientific Activities
Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar has remained actively involved in conferences, workshops, research supervision and scientific capacity building. During his tenure as Chairman of the Department of Physics, he was associated with the International Conference on New Frontiers in Experimental and Theoretical Physics held at UAF in 2018.
At the conference, he emphasized the importance of quality education and problem-solving research in responding to the scientific and technological challenges of the modern era.
His academic record also includes participation in international and national scientific conferences, materials science and nanotechnology activities, workshops on research methods and scientific writing, and editorial review work for journals dealing with electromagnetics and related disciplines.
About the Faculty of Sciences at UAF
The Faculty of Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, has a long academic history. According to UAF, the faculty was established in 1974 after evolving from the former Basic Sciences and Arts division and is now the university’s second-largest faculty.
Its academic and research portfolio extends across disciplines including Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Botany, Mathematics, Statistics, Zoology, Wildlife and Fisheries, Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
