Prof Dr Bakht Baidar Khan
Prof Dr Bakht Baidar Khan, Professor Dept of Livestock Management, Faculty of Animals Husbandry, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad left us to reach his eternal aboard in the heaven. He was above 91 and took his last breath at Al-Shifa International Hospital, Faisalabad on Thursday morning on Oct 30, 2025. His funeral was offered in the ground adjacent to his house and Bahar-e-Madina mosque after maghrib prayer near his residence 182-Gilberg B, adjacent to Shiblee College, Gulberg Faisalabad. He was laid to rest in Kamal Abad graveyard.

He obtained his basic education, Matric from Lahore and joined the College of Veterinary Sciences (CVS), Lahore and obtained his B.V. Sc. BSc (A.H) degree under the Punjab University, Lahore. After graduation the first service started at Kunja Tenga, Bahawalnagar. Soon after he joined the West Pakistan Agricultural University (WPAU), Lyallpur in 1961 as an Instructor. He completed his M.Sc. (Hons.) in Livestock Management (LM) at Faculty of Animal Husbandry, West Pakistan Agricultural University (WPAU), Lyallpur in 1964. Two further certified trainings on (i) Wildlife Biology and (ii) Ghee Testing (1963) are also on his credit.
Dr B B Khan was offered first appointment in the Dept of Livestock Management (LM) on Sep 17, 1964 as Instructor and joined as Lecturer on 11-8-1965 under the Deanship of Prof Dr Israr ul Haq, the first Vice Chancellor of the WPAU, Lyallpur. Soon after joining the University, he was offered (24-6-1965) a scholarship for a PhD program in Animal Sciences (AS) under Inter-University Exchange Program of USAID between WPAU Lyallpur and the Washington State University (WSU) Pullman, Washington, USA. He left abroad on 30-8-1965 for Pullman Campus, later shifted to Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA where he completed his PhD (with CGPA 3.84/4.0) and returned back on 28-6-1969. He joined back as Senior Lecturer at the Dept of Livestock Management.
He was promoted to Assistant Professor on 1-6-1970 and Associate Professor in LM on Aug 16, 1975 and raised to a full Professor on 21-5-1987 in grade 20. Prof Dr Manzoor ud Din Ahmad was the then Dean of FAH.
He was appointed as Chairman of the Dept of Livestock Management (CLM) on 16-9-1989 and became Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry on 16-8-1990 for three years. Dr Abrar H Gilani replaced him as Dean of the Faculty on 4-9-1993 then Dr B B Khan joined back the Dept as chair on 19-9-1993. Dr B B Khan was granted scale 21 on 29-5-1993 and retired on April 19, 1994.
After his retirement on 19-4-1994 from the Dept. he continued coming to Dept. Owing to his God gifted qualities and the respect he commanded, he was offered a position of Professor Emeritus in the Dept of Livestock Management in 1995. He was recommended for the award of the status as Professor Emeritus on 30-4-1994 and 15-6-1994, when Prof Dr Raza Ali Gill was the Chairman (CLM) and Dr Munawar Ahmaed Sial was the Dean FAH. He joined as Professor Emeritus on 8-1-1995. Ironically he was the only Professor Emeritus in the University who was visiting & coming regularly to his Dept and prudently contributed in every event, all weathers and all seasons. His help was omni present for all and his work, commitment, devotion, dedication and loyalty at all ages was a great inspiration to students, as well as to the Faculty colleagues.
He enjoyed a great respect from his students and Faculty colleagues. He visited many times to Secretary and Minister of Livestock and Dairy Development on 30-9-1989 regarding student employment and degree issues.
Dr Khan was an eminent teacher, researcher, thinker and author of his time. As per saying by one of his friends, he was Muslim by actions, he possessed Islamic ideology, prayers were based on sincerity, he worshiped through his deeds, service to community was his purpose of life. He possessed these qualities and exhibited these in his life span spread over throughout his service life. He remained at work all of his life, even he visited in all thick and thin times of his life.
He encouraged all his students and colleagues for hard work, he inculcated the writing skills themselves, guided them properly and showed them the path of successful writing leading to success. He was busy in writing books and manuals and giving them authorships even with slight help.
By virtue of these qualities, he will be remembered always by his students and colleagues in Dept and Faculty alike. He earned his name and fame through his dedication, hard work and commitment.
For many students he noy only a teacher, but was a virtual father and tried to spice the lives of many students. He helped many students not only technically but financially too. Dr Muhammad Aslam Dar (Ex president of Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Sialkot) once said that Dr B B Khan is a nice, sophisticated, man of words, and a great teacher of all times. He was his committee member in doctoral pursuits along with Prof Dr Abrar Hussain Gilani in the Faculty. “He showed great kindness in mentoring me and correction of his dissertation. His words are an asset for me till today” he further said.
Dr B B Khan joined this Project # 149 (PL480) as a Senior Research Officer (SRO) on March 1, 1974, when Prof Dr M Jamil Qureshi was the PI and Dr M B Sial was the Dean of the Faculty. He became the Principal Investigator (PI) later on and completed this project (scheme) in March 1978 with full zeal, devotion and an exemplary concluding write up. This project was Effect of Heat Stress on milk production of dairy buffaloes.
During this period three main project (schemes) were running in the Dept of Livestock Management. Yellow Coloration of wool in sheep by Prof Dr Nazir Ahmad Ch, fat tailed sheep project by Prof Dr Sadaqat Hayat Hanjra and Heat stress in dairy buffaloes by Prof Dr B B Khan, were the main projects in the Faculty at that time. He has a long list of MSc students, may be more than 50. Once upon a time we were five students viz: Mr Jamal ud Tariq Mahmood (Sri Lanka), Muhammad Yaseen (Bahawalnagar), Abdul Ghaffar (Sahiwal) and myself (Muhammad Younas) during 1975-1978 working in this scheme with Dr B B Khan. Dr Khan produced two PhDs under his supervision.
Dr Bakht B Khan was a prolific writer. His scientific papers run into hundreds including both in English and Urdu. He published a Journal on Animal Sciences from the Faculty. He remained Editorial head for the Pakistan Journal of Agricultural Sciences (Pak JAS) at University for a long time. He also was attached with PVJ as Technical Consultant. His advisory services were much open for all writers and most of the Journals. Prof Dr Bakht Baidar Khan has written so many books and manuals for the faculty students related to their text subjects.
