Morocco and Egypt Farmers Face Ruin Over Price Collapse and Quality

Poultry farmers in Morocco and Egypt are sounding the alarm over a devastating drop in chicken and egg prices that has crushed their profitability. Industry leaders attribute this sudden crash to unverified quality rumors that have swept across the Arab region over the past several weeks.

Massive Financial Losses in Morocco

The National Association of Poultry Breeders of Morocco recently stated that the selling price of live broiler chickens has plunged to less than MAD 7 ($0.76) per kg. Meanwhile, actual production costs range between MAD 15 ($1.62) and MAD 17 ($1.84) per kg.

This massive gap between production expenses and market prices is causing severe financial losses with every single production cycle. The association warned that the prolonged period of low prices has pushed many producers to the brink of bankruptcy.

Falling Prices in Egypt

A similar situation is unfolding in Egypt. Dr Abdel Aziz El-Sayed, head of the poultry division at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, revealed current pricing trends:

  • White and brown/red eggs: Sold at farms for around EGP 65 ($1.26) per carton and reaching consumers at EGP 80 to 85 ($1.56 to $1.65).
  • Locally produced eggs: Sold at farms for approximately EGP 80 per carton and retailing around EGP 90 ($1.75).

Harmful Rumors Drive Market Panic

The current crisis is largely tied to social media rumors claiming that poultry is being fed with hormones and harmful substances. This misinformation began spreading in Yemen in May, where local publications warned of potential dangers from poultry meat and eggs using anonymous sources. As a result, broiler meat prices in Yemen fell by nearly 20% in just a few days as consumers stopped buying.

Dr El-Sayed noted that these rumors resurface in the region every three years on average. This time, they have caused major market confusion and a dangerous drop in sales. He emphasized that the panic is completely illogical, stating that poultry remains a safe and affordable source of high-quality protein.
